Chapter Seven

Kym glanced at her cell phone and debated whether to answer, and then decided she’d had enough moping for one day.

“Where are you?” Mara asked.

Lost and trying to figure out my life. “I’m at the park, enjoying the sun,” she responded, keeping her tone light while pushing her lunch trash into the recycle bin. Her feet dragged as she made her way towards the salon.

“Then please stop by Bloom’s on your way back. I have something to show you.”

Kym took a long, fortifying breath. “I’ll be there in ten minutes. Bye.”

The elation in her best friend’s voice didn’t contribute to easing her funk. In fact, the cheer spiraled into a downright gloom.

Kym didn’t want to discuss the details of her friend’s wedding, or see the bliss on her face. She didn’t want to think about how Mara had gotten lucky enough to marry her first love, and how she’d now have to share her best friend. She certainly didn’t want to think about Brad, or Zach.

Not that Zach came anywhere close to being in the same category as Brad, but she wanted to be with someone who could be totally honest.

Her parents and Brad and men preoccupied her to the point she almost forgot to turn on Main Street. After a few more hundred yards, she opened the door to Elkridge Blooms, the flower store at the opposite end of the block from her salon. She instantly spotted Mara, but didn’t see Mara’s brother or her sister-in-law.

“Hey. Where’s Gina?” Kym allowed Gus, the Beagle mix guarding the door to give her a good sniff.

Mara’s bold choice of a cobalt blue V-neck T-shirt that enhanced her eyes and espresso hair, again reminding Kym everyone’s life seemed to be changing except hers. Gone was the black ‘uniform’ her friend always wore. That’s what love did to a person. It changed a person. That’s the kind of love she wanted in her life.

“If I didn’t know you turned over this place to Tony and Gina, I’d think you still ran the shop. You’re here more than they are.” Kym stopped to pet Buddy, Mara’s other dog, as the smell of basil and mint wafted over from the table filled with miniature herb pots.

Buddy, Mara’s seeing-eye dog, made a couple of turns before collapsing again on the floor in his usual spot behind the counter.

“Tony’s out delivering last minute orders, and Gina took little Tony to the pediatrician for a checkup. I told them I’d cover the store since your fitting appointment got cancelled. Besides, I want to get started on the flowers for my wedding.” Mara moved toward the back room. “So what’s up with you?”

The anticipation on her friend’s face made Kym a bit wary. “Not much. I just needed a break from Su. She’s driving me crazy.”

“That’s odd.”

Odd? “You know Su. Things with her never change.”

“Come here. I want to show you something.” Mara stopped by her backroom workbench and handed Kym an envelope. “I’m not talking about Su. I’m talking about you.
